PVC vs PUR vs TPE cable jackets for trailers and cargo equipment
The jacket is what the environment actually touches. On a trailer, a reefer lead or a forklift, the wrong compound cracks in the cold, swells in diesel or wears through on the first rough surface. Here is how the common jacket materials compare, and how to specify one.
Why the jacket decides cable life
Conductors rarely fail on their own in transport equipment. They fail after the jacket has let something in: water through a cut, oil that softened the compound, or cold that cracked it. The jacket also sets how the cable behaves when it flexes, which is why a coiled trailer cord and a fixed harness branch often need different materials even when they carry the same circuits.
The common jacket materials compared
The comparison below is qualitative and follows the published jacket guides of cable makers such as igus and distributors such as MISUMI. Each material is a family of compounds, and a specific grade can differ a lot from the family's typical behavior, so always check the datasheet of the cable you are buying.

Two points from those guides are worth repeating. igus lists notch resistance and low-temperature flexibility among PUR's strengths. MISUMI and others note that PVC's plasticizers can migrate out on prolonged oil contact, which is why an ordinary PVC cord that looks fine when new can harden and crack on a greasy fifth-wheel deck.

Primary wire insulation: GPT vs GXL, TXL and SXL
Inside a harness, the individual conductors in North American vehicles are usually SAE J1128 low-voltage primary cable. GPT is general-purpose PVC-insulated wire. GXL, TXL and SXL use cross-linked polyethylene insulation, which does not melt the way PVC does, and wire makers such as Allied Wire & Cable publish a rating of −40 °C to 125 °C for those types. They differ in wall thickness: SXL is the thickest (standard wall), GXL is thin wall, and TXL is the thinnest.
- SXL where abrasion resistance matters more than bundle size.
- GXL as a general choice for trailer and chassis harnesses.
- TXL where weight and bundle diameter matter, with more attention to protection.
Whichever you choose, the sealed terminal and its seal must match the wire's insulation diameter, which changes with wall thickness. Specify both together.
Overmolding and the jacket
Many transport cables end in an overmolded plug or strain relief. The molding only seals if it bonds to, or grips, the jacket under it, and not every molding compound bonds to every jacket. PUR and TPE jackets are often paired with compatible molding materials for that reason. If the part is overmolded, ask the supplier to confirm jacket and molding compatibility and to show how the seal was verified, for example by an immersion or pressure test on sample parts.
How to specify a jacket without naming a brand
- State the temperature range, including the lowest temperature at which the cable must flex, not just survive.
- List the fluids it will meet: diesel, hydraulic oil, grease, de-icing fluid, battery electrolyte, cleaning agents.
- Describe the movement: static, occasional flex, continuous flex, coiled.
- Describe the mechanical exposure: abrasion surface, crush, cut, impact.
- State outdoor exposure: UV, ozone, salt spray, washdown.
- State flame or halogen requirements if the application has them.
- Name the governing cable standard where one exists (SAE J1067, SAE J1128, EN 50525) and let the supplier propose a compound that meets it, with datasheet evidence.
Common questions
Is PUR better than PVC for trailer cables?
For flexing, abrasion and oil exposure, PUR generally performs better and costs more. For a static, protected run, PVC may be adequate. Match the material to the exposure.
Which jacket stays flexible in extreme cold?
TPE and PUR compounds are generally better than standard PVC in cold. Cold-rated PVC grades exist. Check the cold bend or cold impact rating on the datasheet.
Why did my PVC cord go hard?
Plasticizers can migrate out of PVC with age, heat and oil exposure, leaving it stiff and prone to cracking.
What is H07RN-F?
A harmonized European designation for heavy-duty rubber-insulated, rubber-sheathed flexible cable, covered by EN 50525-2-21, widely used for outdoor and industrial power leads.
