ISO 7638 ABS/EBS connector: pinout and cable guide
On European and many other tractor–trailer combinations, the trailer's anti-lock and electronic braking systems get their own dedicated seven-pin connection. This is what ISO 7638 defines, and what a replacement cable has to match.
What ISO 7638 is
ISO 7638 specifies the connector that carries power and communication between a towing vehicle and a trailer's ABS or EBS. It has two parts:
- ISO 7638-1 for vehicles with a 24 V supply, the heavy commercial vehicle case;
- ISO 7638-2 for vehicles with a 12 V supply.
According to connector maker Erich Jaeger, the current edition of both parts is dated 2018. The 12 V and 24 V plug and socket housings are coded differently so the two cannot be connected by accident, and a plug inserted incorrectly is pushed out by an ejector pin.
The braking connector is separate from the lighting connectors. A European tractor typically presents an ISO 7638 socket for the brakes alongside a lighting connection: either the 15-pin ISO 12098 connector, or the older pair of 7-pin 24N and 24S connectors (see 24N, 24S and 15-pin trailer connectors). North American trailers generally do not use ISO 7638; their ABS is powered through the SAE J560 7-way instead (see trailer ABS power and PLC4Trucks).
ISO 7638 contact allocation
The table follows the allocation published by Erich Jaeger for ISO 7638-1 and -2. The terminal numbers in the last column refer to the German DIN 72552 terminal designations that many European wiring diagrams use.

Two points stand out. First, the valve circuits have their own heavier plus and minus conductors, separate from the electronics supply. Valve current is what the 4 mm² conductors are for, and a high-resistance connection there shows up as braking faults rather than as a dead system. Second, contacts 6 and 7 carry the CAN data link between towing vehicle and trailer, defined in the ISO 11992 series. A five-pin version of the connector without contacts 6 and 7 also exists, because CAN is not required for basic ABS function.
ABS vs EBS on the same connector
Trailer ABS needs power and a warning signal. Trailer EBS, which controls brake pressure electronically, also uses the data link. How an EBS trailer behaves when paired with a five-pin cable, or with a tractor that has no CAN on the connector, depends on the brake system maker, so check its documentation. When a trailer shows an EBS fault only behind certain tractors, the ISO 7638 cable and the tractor socket's contacts 6 and 7 are worth checking before the trailer modulator.
The cable between the plugs
ISO 7638 defines the connector. The multi-core cable used for trailer connections is covered separately in Europe by the ISO 4141 series on road vehicle connecting cables. When you specify or buy an ISO 7638 cable, check:
- Conductor sizes that match the contact allocation: two heavier valve conductors and five lighter ones.
- Twisted pair for CAN. Contacts 6 and 7 carry a differential data signal, so the pair should be twisted as the cable specification requires, not just any two cores.
- Seven-core, not five-core, if any trailer in the fleet uses EBS.
- Coiled or straight to suit the coupling geometry, with jacket material rated for the cold and the oil it will see (see PVC vs PUR vs TPE jackets).
- Voltage coding of both plugs. A 12 V ISO 7638-2 plug will not mate with a 24 V socket, by design.
Diagnosing a trailer brake connection fault
- Inspect both sockets and both plugs for corrosion, pushed-back contacts and cracked housings.
- Check supply voltage on contacts 1 and 2 at the trailer end, relative to their own returns on 4 and 3, not relative to chassis.
- Check the warning circuit on contact 5 against the tractor maker's description of how its lamp is driven.
- For EBS, check continuity and isolation of contacts 6 and 7, and that the pair has not been swapped in a repair.
- Flex the cable along its length and at each strain relief while monitoring, to catch broken cores.
Diagnostic adapters that plug into the ISO 7638 connection are sold for several workshop scan tools. Follow the tool maker's instructions, since what they read depends on the trailer system.
Common questions
Is ISO 7638 used in North America?
It is not the usual arrangement. North American trailers normally power their ABS through the SAE J560 7-way, and report faults over the power line. Equipment built for export, or trailers imported from elsewhere, may carry ISO 7638.
Can I use a 12 V ISO 7638 cable on a 24 V vehicle?
No. The two parts of the standard use differently coded housings so that they cannot be connected. Buy the part that matches the vehicle's supply.
Why do some ISO 7638 cables have only five cores?
Contacts 6 and 7 carry CAN data, which basic ABS does not need. Five-core cables serve ABS-only trailers. An EBS trailer needs the seven-core version.
Does the wire color matter if the pins are right?
Electrically, the contact is what matters. Following the standard colors makes later repairs and inspections faster and reduces the chance that a future repair crosses circuits.
What to send a supplier
- ISO 7638-1 (24 V) or ISO 7638-2 (12 V), and five- or seven-pole.
- Cable specification, including conductor cross-sections and CAN pair requirements.
- Coiled or straight, working length and end lead lengths.
- Plug material, sealing and strain relief requirements.
- Test requirements: continuity, contact-to-contact isolation and correct allocation on every cable.
